The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is the world’s leading achievement award for young people. It encourages young people to develop independence, commitment, build confidence, leadership and teamwork through being involved in a personalized program of activities. Participation in DofE supports young people taking their own challenges, follows their passion and discovers strengths and talents they did not know they had. As the school’s Career Adviser, I can see how it benefits young people in their preparation for the world of work. The school fully supports the award and recognizes its value for developing skills and attributes in young people.
There are three levels to the Duke of Edinburgh scheme – Bronze, Silver and Gold. Once every aspect of a level is completed you obtain your award and can choose to go onto the next level of the scheme. Here at Oldfield School we have been running the DofE successfully for at least ten years. The journey begins in Year 9 for those that are interested in taking part, at Bronze level, and continues in Year 10 (or Year 12) at silver level and concludes with gold in Sixth Form.
